In a pamphlet^ published in Austriaearly in 1919, and written by a priest who was formerlyspiritual adviser to the Duchess of Hohenberg, it wasdirectly charged that the court of Vienna and the Hungariannobility had instigated the Serajevo assassinations. Theauthors theory was that Ferdinand and his wife were sac-rificed in order to pave the way for a break with theSerbians. FRANCIS JOSEPH,Emperor of Austria, whose death, in 1916, closed a reign of 68 years I—5 65 OUTBREAK AND CAUSES Vienna and by the Hungarian aristocracy, headed by CountTisza. Serajevo, the scene of the tragedy and the capital ofBosnia, is situated on a small tributary of the river Bosna,forty-seven miles from the Serbian, and forty-two from theMontenegrin border. Its population in 1910 was 51,919,chiefly Serbo-Croatians, with small colonies of Gipsies andJews. Frequently called the Damascus of the North, itspread over a narrow valley closed on the east by a semi-circle of hills. It was still half Oriental, but had beenlargely rebuilt in Western fashion. A castle and barracks,formerly occupied by an Austrian garrison, stood on a cliffoverlooking the city.
