Výroky editovat

O Bohu a Kristu editovat

Complain to God you may, but to complain of God (though but by an unsuitable carriage and the language of your actions) you must not. [1]
As God did not at first choose you because you were high, so he will not forsake you because you are low. [2]
  • Zákon nás posílá ke Kristu, abychom jím byli ospravedlněni, a Kristus nás posílá k zákonu, abychom jím byli řízeni.
The law sends us to Christ to be justified, and Christ sends us to the law to be regulated. [3]
  • Kristus nám není sladký, dokud se nám hřích nestane hořkým.
Christ is not sweet till sin be made bitter to us. [4]
Jesus, our head, is already in heaven; and if the head be above water, the body cannot drown. [5]

O Boží prozřetelnosti editovat

  • Milost dává slib a prozřetelnost jej splácí.
Grace makes the promise and providence the payment. [6]
Providence so orders the case, that faith and prayer come betwixt our wants and supplies, the goodness of God may be the more magnified in our eyes thereby. [7]
Some providences, like Hebrew letters, must be read backwards. [8]
Providence is like a curious piece of arras made of a thousand shreds, which, single, appear useless, but put together, and stitched up orderly, they represent a beautiful history to the eye. [9]
It is my ignorance of God's design that makes me quarrel with Him. [10]

O hříchu a hříších editovat

Though sin brought in the husbandman's sweat, yet now not to sweat would increase his sin. [11]
  • Skrze bázeň Boží lidé odstupují od zlého, ale skrze bázeň před lidmi utíkají ke zlému.
By the fear of the Lord men depart from evil, by the fear of man they run themselves into evil. [12]
Here I see the true face of sin: if I yield to thy temptation, I must either feel the pangs of conscience, or the flames of hell. [13]
It is easier to declaim like an orator against a thousand sins in others, than to mortify one sin like christians, in ourselves; to be more industrious in our pulpits than in our closets; to preach twenty sermons to our people, than one to our own hearts. [14]

O Bibli editovat

Písma nás učí nejlepšímu způsobu, jak žít, nejvznešenějšímu způsobu, jak trpět, a nejutěšenějšímu způsobu, jak zemřít.
The Scriptures teach us the best way of living, the noblest way of suffering and the most comfortable way of dying. [15]
I know there is nothing in the word or in the works of God that is repugnant to sound reason, but there are some things in both that are opposite to carnal reason as well as above right reason; and therefore our reason never shows itself more unreasonable than in summoning those things to its bar that transcend its sphere and capacity. [16]
  • Způsob, jakým Bůh zjevoval svou vůli lidem, se též velmi liší. Některým byla zjevena zvláštními, osobními a mimořádnými odhaleními. (…)
The manner of God’s revealing His will to men is also very varied. Some have had special, personal and peculiar discoveries of it made to them. (…) But now, all are tied up to the ordinary standing rule of the written Word and must not expect any such extraordinary revelations from God. The way we now have to know the will of God concerning us in difficult cases is to search and study the Scriptures, and where we find no particular rule to guide us in this or that particular case, there we are to apply general rules and govern ourselves according to the analogy and proportion they bear towards each other. [17]

Ostatní editovat

  • To, co nezačíná modlitbou, zřídkakdy končí utěšeně.
That which begins not with prayer, seldom winds up with comfort. [18]
  • Ti, kdo znají Boha, budou pokorní, a ti, kdo znají sebe, nemohou být pyšní.
They that know God will be humble, and they that know themselves, cannot be proud. [19]
  • Nepohřbívej církev příliš kvapně předtím, než bude mrtvá! Vydrž, dokud Kristus nevyzkouší, co dovede, než nad ní nadobro zlomíš hůl.
Be not too quick to bury the church before she is dead ! stay till Christ hath tried his skill, before you give it up for lost. [20]
  • Přijímajíce cizí lidi, někteří někdy nevědomky přijali anděly; ale přijímajíce cizí učení, mnozí nevědomky přijímali ďábly.
By entertaining of strange persons, men sometimes entertain angels unawares: but by entertaining of strange doctrines, many have entertained devils unaware. [21]

Ve výrocích editovat

  • Nikdy v životě jsem neviděl tolik plačících očí ani neslyšel tolik hořkého nářku. (John Galpine o Flavelově pohřbu)
I never saw so many weeping eyes, nor heard so much bitter lamenation in all my life. [22]
  • Spisy puritánů byly mým bohatstvím. Obzvláště spisům dr. Owena, pana Howea a pana Flavela právem náleží to postavení. (William Wilberforce)
Puritans' writing were a mine of wealth. In particular, the writings of Dr. Owen, Mr. Howe and Mr. Flavel well deserve that character. [22]
  • Owen, a Baxter, a Flavel, a Howe a Matthew Henry byli muži, na které byli nonkonformisté právem hrdí. Byli to muži, jejichž jména by dělala čest seznamu členů každé křesťanské církve. (J. C. Ryle)
Owen, and Baxter, and Flavel, and Howe, and Matthew Henry were men of whom Nonconformist were justly proud. They were men whose names would do honour to the rolls of any Christian Church. [22]
  • Johnu Flavelovi bezpochyby dlužím více než kterémukoli jinému neinspirovanému autoru. (Archibald Alexander)
To John Flavel I certainly owe more than to any uninspired author. [22]
1] (Charles Haddon Spurgeon)
He was a man worth making a pilgrimage to hear. What a crime it was to silence his heaven-touched lips by the abominable Act of Uniformity! [23]

Poznámky editovat

  1. Zákon o jednotné bohoslužbě (Act of Uniformity) z roku 1662 nařizoval v anglikánské církvi jednotnou liturgii, kterou mnozí puritáni odmítli.
