John Owen

John Owen (1616-1683) byl anglický puritánský teolog a nonkonformistický kazatel. Ve 40. letech 17. století působil jako kaplan v armádě Olivera Cromwella a v letech 1654-1655 byl i členem anglického parlamentu.

O hříchu a pokušení

• Ať nepředstírá, že se bojí hříchu ten, kdo se též nebojí pokušení! Tyto dvě [věci] jsou příliš spojeny, aby se mohly oddělit. Nemá skutečně v nenávisti ovoce ten, kdo má potěšení v kořeni.
  Let no man pretend to fear sin that does not fear temptation also! These two are too closely united to be separated. He does not truly hate the fruit who delights in the root.
• Ať si nikdo nemyslí, že zabije hřích několika mírnými nebo jemnými údery. Ten, kdo jednou ranil hada, nepokračuje-li jej bít dokud jej nezabije, může litovat, že vůbec začal ten svár. A stejně tak ten, kdo se počal vypořádávat se svým hříchem, a nepronásledoval jej nepřetržitě až do smrti.
  Let no man think to kill sin with few, easy, or gentle strokes. He who hath once smitten a serpent, if he follow not on his blow until it be slain, may repent that ever he began the quarrel. And so he who undertakes to deal with sin, and pursues it not constantly to the death.
• Hřích vždy míří ke krajnosti; vždy, pokaždé, když povstává, aby pokoušel či sváděl, bude-li mít volný průchod, bude směřovat k nejvyššímu hříchu svého druhu. Každá nečistá myšlenka či pohled by byla cizoložstvím, mohla-li by, každá myšlenka nevěry by byla ateismem, dovolilo-li by se jí se vyvinout. Každý nárůst žádosti, má-li mít volný průchod, dosahuje vrcholu ničemnosti; je jako hrob, který se nikdy neuspokojí. Lstivost hříchu vidíme v tom, že zpočátku jsou jeho návrhy umírněné, ale když převládnou, zatvrzují lidská srdce a přivádí je do záhuby.
  Sin aims always at the utmost; every time it rises up to tempt or entice, if it has its own way it will go out to the utmost sin in that kind. Every unclean thought or glance would be adultery if it could, every thought of unbelief would be atheism if allowed to develop. Every rise of lust, if it has its way reaches the height of villainy; it is like the grave that is never satisfied. The deceitfulness of sin is seen in that it is modest in its first proposals but when it prevails it hardens mens’ hearts, and brings them to ruin.

  Temptations and occasions put nothing into a man, but only draw out what was in him before.

O Bibli

• V božských Písmech jsou mělčiny a hlubiny; mělčiny, kde se může brodit jehňátko, a hlubiny, kde může plavat i slon.
  In the divine Scriptures, there are shallows and there are deeps; shallows where the lamb may wade, and deeps where the elephant may swim.

• Kdo se modlí, jak by měl, bude usilovat žít tak, jak se modlí.
  He who prays as he ought will endeavor to live as he prays.
• Odpozoroval-li jsem něco zkušeností, pak toto: člověk může měřit svůj růst a úpadek v milosti podle svých myšlenek a rozjímání nad osobou Krista, a nad slávou Kristova království, a nad Jeho láskou.
  If I have observed anything by experience, it is this: a man may take the measure of his growth and decay in grace according to his thoughts and meditations upon the person of Christ, and the glory of Christ's Kingdom, and of His love.

O kazatelích

• Ten, kdo je pro svůj lid na kazatelně častěji, než je pro svůj lid ve své komůrce, je jen ubohým strážným.
  He that is more frequent in his pulpit to his people than he is in his closet for his people, is but a sorry watchman.

  A minister may fill his pews, his communion roll, the mouths of the public, but what that minister is on his knees in secret before God Almighty, that he is and no more.
