Výroky editovat

O Bohu editovat

  • Bůh varuje, než raní.
God warns before he wounds. [1]
God is either the worst enemy or the best friend. [2]
  • Bůh je ten první a nejlepší, a proto musí mít to první a nejlepší.
God is the first and best, and therefore must have the first and best. [3]
By the light of nature we see God as a God above us, by the light of the law we see Him as a God against us, but by the light of the gospel, we see Him as Immanuel, God with us. [4]

O Kristu editovat

  • Když měl Kristus opustit tento světa, zanechal poslední vůli. Svou duši odevzdal svému Otci, své tělo odkázal Josefu z Arimatie, aby bylo řádně pohřbeno; jeho šaty připadly vojákům; svou matku nechal péči Jana; co však měl nechat svým ubohým učedníkům, kteří vše zanechali pro něj? Stříbro ani zlato neměl; ale zanechal jim něco, co bylo nekonečně lepší, svůj pokoj.
When Christ was about to leave the world he made his will. His soul he committed to his Father; his body he bequeathed to Joseph, to be decently interred; his clothes fell to the soldiers; his mother he left to the care of John: but what should he leave to his poor disciples, that had left all for him? Silver and gold he had none; but he left them that which was infinitely better, his peace. [5]
  • Pojď a viz vítězství kříže. Kristovy rány jsou tvé lékařství, Jeho muka tvé spočinutí, Jeho zápasy tvá vítězství, Jeho sténání tvé zpívání, Jeho bolesti tvé ulehčení, Jeho pohanění tvá sláv, Jeho smrt tvůj život, Jeho trápení tvé spasení.
Come, and see the victories of the cross. Christ's wounds are thy healings, His agonies thy repose, His conflicts thy conquests, His groans thy songs, His pains thine ease, His shame thy glory, His death thy life, His sufferings thy salvation. [6]
  • Nikdo není od Krista poslán zpět prázdný než ti, kteří k němu přicházejí plní sama sebe.
None are sent empty away from Christ but those who come to him full of themselves. [7]
  • Ač nás Kristus vysvobodil z prokletí zákona, nevysvobodil nás z jeho přikázání.
Though Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, yet not from the command of it. [8]

The woman was made of a rib out of the side of Adam; not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved. [9]
Man is not his own maker, therefore he must not be his own master; but the Author of his being must be the director of his motions and the centre of them. [10]

O hříchu obecně a hříších jednotlivě editovat

  • Taková je zkaženost přirozenosti, že špatní mnohem pravděpodobněji zkazí dobré než dobří napraví špatné.
Such is the corruption of nature that the bad are much more likely to debauch the good than the good to reform the bad. [11]
None so deaf as those that will not hear. [12]
By having fellowship with sin, which is abominable, we make ourselves abominable. [13]
If God and his grace do not rule us, sin and Satan will have possession of us. [14]
  • Ti, kdo rozmnožují bohy, rozmnožují si hoře; nebo komukoliv přijde jeden Bůh příliš málo, shledá, že dva jsou příliš mnoho, a přece ani stovky ne dost.
Those that multiply gods multiply griefs to themselves; for, whoever thinks one God too little, will find two too many, and yet hundreds not enough. [15]
It was the greatest honor God did to man that he made man in the image of God; but it is the greatest dishonor man has done to God that he has made God in the image of man. [16]
We should take heed of pride, because it is a sin that turned angels into devils. [17]
Pride makes a god of self, covetousness makes a god of money, sensuality makes a god of the belly; whatever is esteemed or loved, feared or served, delighted in or depended on, more than God, that (whatever it is) we do in effect make a god of. [18]
When Peter would prove himself no disciple of Christ, he cursed and swore. [19]

O ateismu editovat

No man will say, "There is no God" 'till he is so hardened in sin that it has become his interest that there should be none to call him to account. [20]
  • V základu každého hříchu je něco z praktického ateismu.
There is something of practical atheism at the bottom of all sin. [20]
Satan teaches men first to doubt and then to deny; he makes them sceptics first, and so by degrees makes them atheists. [21]
  • Nic nedává ateismu a nevíře převahu tak, jako tělesnost těch, kdo činí z náboženství služebníka svých smyslových choutek a světských zájmů.
Nothing gives greater advantage to atheism and infidelity than the carnality of those that make religion a servant to their sensual appetites and secular interests. [22]

O smrti editovat

The godly die, and their death is their deliverance; the wicked perish, and their death is their destruction. [23]
It ought to be the business of every day to prepare for our last day. [24]
The beauty of holiness is that which the grave, that consumes all other beauty, cannot touch, or do any damage to. [23]
As if men did not die fast enough, they are ingenious at finding out ways to destroy one another. [25]

O Božím soudu editovat

  • Ti, kdo se nevydají do rukou Boží milosti, budou vydáni do rukou Jeho spravedlnosti.
Those who will not deliver themselves into the hand of God's mercy cannot be delivered out of the hand of His justice. [26]
None are ruined by the justice of God but those that hate to be reformed by the grace of God. [27]
  • Když hříchy lidí dosáhnou až do nebe, hněv Boží dosáhne až na zem.
When the sins of a people reach up to heaven, the wrath of God will reach down to the earth. [28]
  • Největší známkou Božího hněvu vůči jakémukoli člověku či lidem je, když od nich odejme svůj zákon.
The greatest sign of God's displeasure against any person or people is his taking his law from them. [29]
Those are marked for ruin who persist in sin, and are not ashamed of the abominations they have committed. [29]

Many mourn for their sins that do not truly repent of them, weep bitterly for them, and yet continue in love and league with them. [30]
Our Saviour often laid it down for a maxim that he who exalts himself shall be abased; he shall either abase himself in true repentance or God will abase him and pour contempt upon him.[31]
  • Pravé pokání míří vůči milovanému hříchu, a se zvláštním zápalem a odhodláním jej odkládá, totiž ten hřích, který se nás nejsnadněji přichytí.
True repentance strikes at the darling sin, and will with a peculiar zeal and resolution put away that, the sin which most easily besets us. [32]

The Bible is a letter God has sent to us; prayer is a letter we send to him. [33]
  • Když Bůh zamýšlí svému lidu projevit milosti, prvé je vede k modlitbě.
When God intends great mercy for his people, he first of all sets them praying. [34]
The best we can say to God in prayer, is what He has said to us. [35]
Outward losses drive good people to their prayers, but bad people to their curses. [36]
The best way of manifesting our affection to our friends is by praying and giving thanks for them. [37]
  • Je dobré si nějak zaznamenávat naše modlitby, abychom je neodřekli naším konáním.
It is good for us to keep some account of our prayers, that we may not unsay them in our practice. [38]

It is easy to be religious when religion is in fashion; but it is an evidence of strong faith and resolution to swim against a stream to heaven, and to appear for God when no one else appears for Him. [27]
Hope for the best, get ready for the worst, and then take what God chooses to send.[39]
  • Velká víra je často procvičována velikými zkouškami a nastrojována na těžké služby.
Strong faith is often exercised with strong trials and put upon hard services. [40]
  • Díkůvzdání je dobré, ale díkůžití lepší.
Thanksgiving is good but Thanks-living is better. [41]
Let me be thankful, first, because he never robbed me before; second, because although he took my purse, he did not take my life; third, because although he took all I possessed, it was not much; and fourth, because it was I who was robbed, not I who robbed.[42]

O církvi editovat

  • Svůdci jsou nebezpečnějšími nepřáteli církve než pronásledovatelé.
Seducers are more dangerous enemies to the church than persecutors. [43]
The way to preserve the peace of the church is to preserve the purity of it. [44]
God will always have a church on earth; but he never said it should be infallible, or perfectly pure from corruption on this side heaven. [45]
Those that are enemies to God's church are enemies to themselves, and, sooner or later, they will be made to see it. [46]

O kazatelích a službě Bohu editovat

Those whom God will employ are first struck with a sense of their unworthiness to be employed. [47]
It is a dangerous thing, in the service of God, to decline from his own institutions; we have to do with a God who is wise to prescribe his own worship, just to require what he has prescribed, and powerful to revenge what he has not prescribed. [48]
It is common for those that will not do their duty to pretend they cannot. [49]
  • Ti, kdo učí svou doktrínou, musí učit svým životě, jinak zboří jednou rukou to, co postavili druhou.
Those who teach by their doctrine must teach by their life, or else they pull down with one hand what they build up with the other. [50]
God does not enjoin impossibilities, but by his commands admonishes us to do what is in our power and to pray for what is not. [51]

O Bibli a pravdě editovat

  • Nechť je naší velkou starostí vědět, jak si stojíme před našimi Biblemi, jestli nás právě ospravedlňují či odsuzují; neboť Soudce vší země bude postupovat podle tohoto pravidla.
Let it be our great concern to see on what terms we stand with our Bibles, whether they justify us or condemn us now; for the Judge of all will proceed by that rule. [52]
The best evidence of our having the truth is our walking in the truth. [53]
Peace is such a precious jewel that I would give anything for it but truth. [54]
  • Boží Slovo obstojí, a nic nezískáme, když se s ním budeme přít, či budeme odkládat se mu podvolit.
God's word will stand, and we shall get nothing by disputing it, or delaying to submit to it. [46]

(Charles Haddon Spurgeon)
He is most pious and pithy, sound and sensible, suggestive and sober, terse and trustworthy. You will find him to be glittering with metaphors, rich in analogies, overflowing with illustrations, superabundant in reflections. He delights in apposition and alliteration; he is ususally plain, quaint, and full of pith; he sees right through a text directly, (...) he is deeply spiritual, heavenly, and profitable; finding good matter in every text, and from all deducing most practical and judicious lessons. [55]
  • Každý kazatel by si jej měl úplně a pečlivě přečíst minimálně jednou. (Charles Haddon Spurgeon o Henryho komentáři)
Every minister ought to read it entirely and carefully through once at least. [56]
(Frederic W. Sanders)
It used to be said about Matthew Henry's Commentary, that he made even the foxes' tails point to Christ.[57]
(George Whitefield)
Burkitt and Henry's Exposition were of admirable use to lead me into (…) Gospel truths. For many months have I been almost always on my knees, to study and pray over these books. [58]
  • Owen, a Baxter, a Flavel, a Howe a Matthew Henry byli muži, na které byli nonkonformisté právem hrdí. Byli to muži, jejichž jména by dělala čest seznamu členů každé křesťanské církve. (J. C. Ryle)
Owen, and Baxter, and Flavel, and Howe, and Matthew Henry were men of whom Nonconformist were justly proud. They were men whose names would do honour to the rolls of any Christian Church.[59]
